Her Last Day

~By Emma Chapman

1...2...3...4... I'm counting my words.
I finished my paper for class and now I'm counting the words.
I need five hundred.
He put me on hold.
He had another call,
that's when I started counting.

"She died in a car wreck tonight," he said.
The phone rang in the back ground, he put me on hold again.
I kept counting.
I could hear him tell his parents.
His mom couldn't believe it.
I asked it she was O.K.
"She'll be fine,” he said, “Hold on a second.”
I kept counting. More information was found.
“She hit a tree and they couldn’t get to her in time.”
I’m almost to the end of my paper, almost done counting.

“Right now she is dead,” I thought.
I finished counting.
“I guess I’ll see you tomorrow,” he said.
We hung up. I ran my fingers halfway through my hair and just held them there.
She died today, I saw her in the hall today.
I added up the words, five hundred and seventy eight, more than enough.
I’ll turn the paper in on Friday.
She won’t be there on Friday.
Today was her last day.

Comments: I wrote this 20 minuates after I found out my friend had died in a car accident
