The Lay of the Seven

~By Tanaquil

Seven starry maids there were of yore
The fairest flowers of elf-kind born
By sea they roamed, and sundering shore;
Beauties of evening and dewy dawn
Elf-maids of Arda; daughters of kings;
A noble alliance of the Legendary Seven
Immortal maidens; loveliest living things
Said to be elf-angels descended from Heaven
Of Luthien I sing, hailed as the Eldar's Evening Star
Enchantress of Doriath; silver being wrought of moonlight
Fair elf-maid whose glowing beauty from afar
Illuminated the darkness of elven-night
Then Elwing; immortal being fair of face
When she ruled ‘twas the elves’ finest hour
Hailed she was, for boundless loveliness and grace
As she wielded the scepter with beauty and power
Tari there was also; summer-maiden, elven fair
Beautiful being of glowing summer’s delight
And the radiance in the golden beauty of her hair
Was wrought of fairest morning light
Then of Andune I sing; brave elf-maid; fair and bold
Yet a dark past she had; of pain and woe
Noble being shrouded with an aura of gold
Beautiful ruler of long ago
Earen there was also; fair queen of lovely spring
Roaming the shores of Elven-home
Lovely elf-maid; spring nymph shimmering
As by emerald sea she would dance and roam
Then came fair Cirnelle; lady wrought of autumn gold
Cirnelle of the bell-like laughter; ne’er sorrowing
So beautiful was she; as it was told
As she wandered with raiment of stars following
And though the Seven lived through times of pain
Through ages of nightshade morrowless
Their alliance held firm; as in elf-blood they were twain
And at age’s end; they passed over sea singing sorrowless
For though sacrifices were made; and life-blood shed
They overcame the odds; and passed the test
Through the tears that were wept as their immortal hearts bled
Grey ships were summoned to bring them into the west
Seven great queens; seven stars shimmering
Set as jewels radiant in the night
Fairest of elf-kind; their night stars glimmering
Out of time and out of sight
So it was; as it was lived and told;
The legend of the elf-maids numbered seven
Fair noblemaids who reigned in times of old
Ethereal beings; gifts from Elf-Heaven
