Heart’s Refuge

~By Matt Russell

As darkness comes
And the world grows cold around me,
Only one thing remains on my mind
That of only one place I wish to be.

That darkness pounds on walls
Making them crumble and fall apart,
And yet I have no fear
For I have already found safe keeping for my heart.

As demons approach
And bring near the threat of fight,
One squeeze of your hand empowers me
And gives me the strength to hold back the night.

While some turn their back on me
And force a tear to my eye,
I take one look at you sweet face
And suddenly forget the urge to cry.

When you stand beside me
And help to stare down this foe,
I put one arm around you
Hoping to never have to let you go.

So when terror comes
And destiny stares me in the face,
I’ll hold you tight and smile
As I take refuge in your tender embrace.
