The Fate of Dreams

~By Babel

You were in my dreams once more;
Just as I remembered you, happy and alive,
Smiling, with laughter in your eyes.
I called out to you in joy and held you again
Determined, this time, to never let you go.

You returned the embrace
But with little warmth or affection.
“I remember you,”, you said,
“from a time long ago - did we once meet?”

My heart sank and I shook my head.
“No,” I replied, “I’m mistaken.”
Turning away, tears coursed down my face
As you blithely went on your way.

Dreams can be shattered, that’s true;
However, some dreams carry the seeds
Of their own destruction and need no outside force
To drive them onto the rocks
Of capricious fate.
