Shattered By Lead

~By Matt

The silence around me is abruptly shattered
As nearby people run for cover,
When they recognize the horrible sound
Whilst a second gun is fired.

Standing on the street corner I can do nothing but gaze
At the rapidly slow scene unfolding,
During which two groups of teenagers stand there
Amidst the dirt and the haze.

A horrible scream from somewhere rings out
Then a young girl falls to the ground,
Her body goes limp while loud gunfire
Suddenly gets drowned by a terrified shout.

More and more onlookers get struck
As bullets continue to tear through the air,
Taking life from those in their way
Caring not who may and may not have any luck.

Unable to move away from the horrible sight
I can do nothing but stand till a sharp pain takes form,
Then suddenly I tumble backwards onto the wet pavement
As I become another innocent casualty of the fight.

Darkness comes to my eyes and the sounds drift away
My body goes cold and tears stream down my face,
And as I lay there all I can think of
Is how I desperately want to stay.

The loud shots slowly start to dissipate
Then my wounded ears pick up a few siren sounds,
And even while the chaos is slowly calmed around me
I can only think of how for some its much too late.

Once the flying shards of lead
Cease in their mission of chaos,
Someone rushes over to my soaked body
But only comments on how I’ll soon be dead.

And so as I slowly begin to fade
I shed one last tear for those that I must leave behind,
Then in my final thought I realize
All my hopes and dreams that will never be made.
