Interview with Obi To' Kenobi
By punkin

punkin: Tell me about yourself. Your hopes, dreams, aspriations, your commitments for your craft?
Obi To' Kenobi: Myself? I don't really know what to say... I've lived a boring life... I love music though. I've always had music playing all the time. Hopes and dreams? I hope to someday play alongside bands like Good Charlotte, and Barenaked Ladies. I aspire to one day not be famous, but to be enjoyed by people. Commitments... Uh... Hmm... I think the biggest commitment I have right now, is to my band.
punkin: When did you first get in contact with music?
Obi To' Kenobi: Uh... I don't know... 7 years ago, I started taking piano lessons, but they weren't very fun, and the technical stuff really didn't do anything for me, so I quit.
punkin: So when you started to play, did you feel right away that you had a talent for music?
Obi To' Kenobi: I guess so... I didn't do very well in school, but if you put an instrument in front of me, I'll have the basics of it down within a day.
punkin: What is your instrument of choice? How many instruments can you play?
Obi To' Kenobi: Instrument of choice... Toss-up between Guitar, Bass, and Drums. As for how many I play, let's see... I play Piano, Violin, Drums, Bass guitar, Guitar, and Harmonica.
punkin: What kinds of music do you like to listen to or like most? Any specific reason why you like that in particular?
Obi To' Kenobi: I mostly listen to pop/punk, and folk music. I listen to them because... I don't know... I just like them... Oh, ska is up there on the list too :)
punkin: How long have you studied music or do you play by ear?
Obi To' Kenobi: I don't study at all. I hate the technical part of music. It just takes all the fun out of it for me.
punkin: Have you always had a musical talent? like when you were young?
Obi To' Kenobi I really don't know... The most musical thing I did was rub sticks together in kindergarten... We did 'Jingle Bells' for the Christmas program.
punkin: Who are your favorite musicians/groups?
Obi To' Kenobi: Let's see here... Simon & Garfunkle, Neil Diamond, Barenaked Ladies, The Arrogant Worms, The Beatles, The Monkees, Good Charlotte, Relient K, Blink 182, Goldfinger, Pennywise, MxPx, Five Iron Frenzy, and The W's.
punkin: Tell me about your band. How long have you been in your band?
Obi To' Kenobi: My current band, A.W.O.L., I've been with for about a month.
punkin: Do you see yourself as more of a composer or a performer?
Obi To' Kenobi: Both. They both have very important aspects.
punkin: Do you compose a lot of music yourself?
Obi To' Kenobi: You bet.
punkin: How long have you played the guitar?
Obi To' Kenobi: About a year and a half
punkin: Who's your favorite guitar player of all time, and why?
Obi To' Kenobi: I'd have to go with B.B. King, because he also never took lessons or anything.
punkin: If you had to play a different instrument, what would it be?
Obi To' Kenobi: Hmmm... I've been meaning to learn Trombone and Trumpet for a while...
punkin If you could perform anywhere, where would it be, and why?
Obi To' Kenobi Anywhere? Hmmm... Probably the Corel Center in Ottawa, Just because that place is cool... Or at the Air Canada Center in Toronto, because Rush has played there, as well as Good Charlotte.
punkin: What would you say is your greatest musical accomplishment?
Obi To' Kenobi: I'd have to say performing in front of a large audience.
punkin: What are your musical dreams/plans for the future?
Obi To' Kenobi: My musical hopes and dreams are to become a better gutiarist. I'm working on that one every day.
punkin: Who influenced you most or inspired you to become the musician that you are?
Obi To' Kenobi: I think my parents were my greatest inspiration. Everything I've ever tried to do, they've been behind me 100%.
punkin: Are there any particular music websites that you like?
Obi To' Kenobi: www.sk88.ca (Had to support these guys... They're awesome.) and for my guitar tab I always go to www.guitarnotes.com
punkin: Where do you work? or what do you do? What do you do there?
Obi To' Kenobi: I work at a small general store, as a Sales Clerk.
punkin: Do you have a homepage? if so, what is the URL?
Obi To' Kenobi: Not yet, but A.W.O.L. will be getting one up soon... I hope.
punkin: Do you have a closing or an inspiration to others to seek this field or encouragement to pursue their dreams?
Obi To' Kenobi: Just follow your heart and don't let anybody tell you that you can't do something.
punkin: Any questions you think we should have asked that we did not?
Obi To' Kenobi: Well you didn't ask where I'm playing next... (Incidently, I'm playing at SonQuest in Durham, Ontario, on August 23rd)
punkin: Thanks for the interview and for all your help and for letting us display your wonderful music!.
