Already a musical star Toby Mckeehan, also known as ‘TobyMac,’ of popular Christian music’s D.C.Talk has released his own solo album which he titled Momentum. Known as the ‘rap’ of D.C.Talk, TobyMac focused on those talents for Dove award winning album Momentum. With a flurry of rhymes and quick beats TobyMac explodes on to the forefront of the rap genre in the Christian musical artist’s world.

Eighteen songs and interludes make this C.D. one worth listening to. TobyMac’s lyrics are encouraging and some songs bring questions to mind, questions such as ‘Why is racism in existence?’ “I’ve always written from the perceptive of moving people to the next level of thought…” TobyMac stated on his website, “Connecting with people, causing people to think.”

With over lapping voices TobyMac brings in a version of the lullaby ‘Hush Little Baby' as he encourages a girl named Irene, that God is listening to her though out her troubles. TobyMac adds a little soul to his album when Kirk Franklin joins him for J-Train. Moving to a slightly softer tone the next track Do you know discuses the concept of being a son of God. Interludes include a solo from TobyMac’s 3-year-old son Truette, whom TobyMac calls ‘Tru-dog’. "Extreme Days" is the first song TobyMac released and made a video for. Many different styles were tried with in the rap genre; all were successful on this album.

“I guess the short answer to “Why do a solo album?” is because I needed to find out who I was as a solo artist” TobyMac spoke of how being part of a trio for so long made him wonder what he could do on his own. He and his two D.C.Talk buddies, known as Tait and Kmax, agreed they would try their own solo albums, while still continuing their band D.C.Talk. “With Momentum, I blinked and suddenly had 25 or 30 song ideas. Basically a blank canvas with limitless colors.”

From the moment he heard it, as a child TobyMac has liked rap music. He often tells a story of when he got his first rap album by then popular artists, Sugarhill Gang’s Rappers Delight, “From there, it just caught fire. I fell in love with hip-hop music.” Momentum takes TobyMac’s reputation as a rapper to the next level as his ‘jamming tunes’ make listeners want to tap their feet and dance to the beat. The fan response had been massive as reviews come in praising TobyMac on a well constructed and creative album. Fans look forward to the next bit of musical art from TobyMac which they hope he is constructing now.
