Percy Sledge

Genre: R & B

Okay, ever wonder where the song When a Man Loves a Woma came from? I am sure you may have heard this in movies, commercials or possibly on the radio...maybe the oldies station. (*wink wink* younger generation....) Do you know who sings it?

Soul music will always be associated with Percy Sledge. People all the world can relate to what he sings. Belting the songs out that could make people cry. His start was pretty simple. While he worked as a hospital nurse in the early '60s, Percy began his professional music career as a member of the Southern soul vocal group the "Esquires Combo". On the advice of local disc jockey, Quin Ivy, he went solo in 1966. When a Man Loves a Woman was his first smash hit that Ivy directed.

It went to Atlantic records, along with topping both the pop and R&B charts of summer 1966. (before many of us were born I know) who loved the song and decided to sign Percy on. This was then followed by the songs, Warm and Tender Love and It Tears Me Up. Most of his songs that were written by Dan Penn and/or Oldman were acknowledged as classics among soul.

Many more songs of Percy Sledge include: (I won't list them all....but take note of the**: Bring It On Home To Me**, Try a Little Tenderness**, Tell It Like It Is, (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay, (If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want To Be Right

The songs with ** may seem familiar to some who have watched the movie The Commitments The story of an Irish band bringing soul to people, the working class...which is what "Jimmy" said, (if you have seen the movie you know the comment made). Much more soul music can be found in this movie, if you are interested.
