Level 42

Genre: Soul/R & B

Level 42 started out in the 80's being a jazz/funk type of band. The group originally consisted of Mark King (bass, vocals), Phil Gould (drums), Boon Gould (guitar), and Mike Lindup (keyboards). By the end of the 80's they had become more of a pop/funk group. The first major hit for them was "Love Meeting Love". Before this however, they did not have any vocals. They were not going to go anywhere unless they had someone singing so Mark sang. The music for them was turning into a new form of soul and R&B.

In the late1985, they finally had hit world wide with the album World Machine where "Lessons In Love" was number one in Britain and "Something About You" was number seven in the US. Beyond this song for the US, they started to head downward. Britain still being the number one country with their hits.

Both of the Gould brothers had left the band in 1987. These were replaced with Alan Murphy and Gary Husband. Murphy passed away with an AIDS-related disease. They had then replaced him with Alan Holdsworth in 1991 for the album Gauranteed. To listen to Level 42, they have a ton of albums and lots of songs. Best bet by far is the Level Best cd. This compilation has the top songs of all of the albums they have done up until Guaranteed.
