Bee Gees

Genre: Rock

What group comes to mind as the greatest group of all the decades? No, I don't mean the new ones that are out now. There is one group that has been around for what feels like forever. The BeeGees. Who are they? Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb have been performing in music industry since they were children. Being born into music with their father, a band leader and mother, a former singer, the trio was destined to become part of the music world.

They made their performances between shows at local movie theaters in Manchester in 1955. Their intention had been merely to mime to records as a novelty entertainment act, but when the records got broken, they went on, really sang, and got a rousing response from the delighted audience. They performed under the names including the Blue Cats, the Rattlesnakes, and for a time, fell under the influence of England's skiffle king Lonnie Donegan, and proto-rock & roller Tommy Steele.

In 1958 they had been moved with the family to Brisbane, Australia where Barry was writing music while they all sang for local talent contests where DJ, Bill Gates found them and gave them a contract to sing at the Beachcomber Nightclub. Their career took off after that. In 1962, they finally got the first recording contract. Around this time, the Beatles were making their mark on the world. This just made the trio try even harder to get their name into the world. They started to sing everything and any type of music. Motown, pop, rock, it all seem to fit with them and they kept going throughout the years.

Then they finally in 1977, they had made a break even farther than they thought. They were approached about contributing to the soundtrack Saturday Night Fever. Many of the songs had stayed number one after the movie came out for weeks, including "How Deep Is Your Love". Each one made number one and stayed on the charts for 24 weeks. The movie had broken the numbers in the listing of best movie. They finally had defeated the Beatles in sales and even had gone through Paul McCartney's 70's popularity.

By the end of the 70's disco was pretty much dead and the wave of drugs and sex was throughout the music world. Many people had been banning most music and burning posters, records and whatever else they could get hands on, including the Bee Gees stuff. Many people were afraid to even dance to the music with the thought of them getting cadted out. In 1981, they tried slowly coming back with new sound and new music. These did not make the top 40 but by 1987, they came back and kept a steady flow of music and fans. They have still kept going until the death of Maurice in January 2003. .
